If you plan to be away for a long time, it is fine to turn your air conditioning unit off. When you turn it on again on return, make sure you turn it on at least 12 hours before use. The low wattage crankcase heater in the unit should keep the compressor warm, as if it goes cold damage can occur.
This mist is absolutely normal and it means warm water vapor is being expelled from the system. Most air conditioners defrost when the outside air temperature goes below 6 degrees Celsius.
