If you’re an electric car owner or planning to buy one, a home EV charging station installation is a must-have for the convenience of charging your car while you sleep. Some electric car owners will already have an EV charging station at home but require an upgrade from a level 1 charger to a level 2, or perhaps require a different connecter when changing their vehicle type or adding another type. Trickle (Slow) Chargers – These are the most simple and basic charging systems. They will often come with your car and can be plugged directly into a standard power point. Level 1 chargers can provide approximately 2kW of power and give you roughly 2km of range for every 10 minutes charged meaning a full charge usually takes about 12 hours (though this depends on your model of car and can be as little as 4 but up to 48 hours). As you can tell these chargers are not the most convenient and can also affect the circuit they are plugged into of your consumer unit (switchboard). This can be avoided by having a 15 amp dedicated power point installed though which is often more convenient.
Single Phase – These are fast chargers and can supply around 7kW of power meaning they can charge at a much faster rate, usually a maximum of 12 hours for almost any electric car. They give about 7 km of range per 10 minutes but require 32 amps to run meaning a switchboard upgrade is often required but is well worth it for those who drive further and more regularly.
3 Phase – Giving up to 22kW of power these chargers can get you over 20 km of range for every 10 minutes so are the ultimate solution for those serious drivers or multiple cars. They do require a 3-Phase power supply coming into the property which most domestic homes don’t have but this is a cleaner and more efficient supply than a standard one (it is common for businesses to have a 3 Phase supply) so again, a switchboard upgrade will be required.
